This imposing oak tree (Quercus petraea) is known not only for its extraordinary grandeur, but also for its historical and symbolic value.
With a circumference of about 8 meters e A height exceeding 25 meters, the Rogolone is one of the most impressive specimens in Italy and one of the largest in all of Europe.
Its extraordinary size and longevity make it a true monument of nature. Estimated date with last coring (March 1988) 295, having grown since 1730.
Throughout the centuries, the oak tree has witnessed multiple changes in the landscape and in the lives of the valley's inhabitants. Its presence has had a strong cultural significance, linked to local traditions that celebrated the strength and sacredness of these great trees. The oak tree has seen the passage of generations and eras, becoming a landmark for the community.
In 1928, Rogolone was recognized as the Natural Monument, gaining official protection because of its importance. This recognition marked the beginning of stricter protection, which has allowed the oak to survive and thrive to the present day.
Today the tree is managed by Italia Nostra who owns it and collaborates with the Municipality of Grandola ed Uniti, l'"History, Nature and Life" Association and the BIM Porlezza which it also supports with a financial contribution.
The Rogolone is an extraordinary example of how nature and community can coexist, with the tree becoming a symbol of a deep connection to history and territory.
The trail leading to the oak tree winds through the lush greenery of the Sanagra Valley, offering a unique experience to those who visit.
Access is facilitated by three well-marked trails.
