Description

Bipelle percussion instrument, used for musical accompaniment during band concerts. It has a metal case and two membranes, struck with sticks to produce sound. Used mainly in liturgical and ritual settings.

Preserved specimen

It is a bipelle drum, that is, it consists of two membranes that close the two ends of the resonance cylinder. It has a short metal case of cylindrical shape. The lower face has a cordoniera, that is, a network of minugia or silk strings stretched over the surface of the membrane. It is usually struck with two wooden sticks on the upper surface (clapper).
