A journey among the rare species of the Sanagra Valley

The varied nature of the geology and the resulting formation of a rich plant landscape create numerous habitats for animal survival and reproduction.

Over the years, there has been no shortage of introductions of allochthonous species: one example concerns the suede, imported about 20 years ago from Piedmont and now present with a substantial population, and the wild boar, which has become ubiquitous and not always well-liked.

During a hike, it is often possible to spot deer o roebucks, present in numerous specimens.
The most fascinating place to observe these ungulates is near the rocky crags in front of theAlpe di Ballarono, where they move nimbly along rough paths, leaping between majestic rock formations.

Le wildlife research performed in Sanagra Valley date back more than 10 years, thanks to the work of experts commissioned by the Province of Como and to the collaboration with the Italian Natural Science Society Milan.

Approximately 120 species of vertebrates including fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds. In addition, sampling along the stream shaft described 55 families including insects, shellfish e worms.

These data confirm the extraordinary biodiversity of the valley, the result of a delicate balance between the natural environment and controlled human interventions.
