The tool was used to heat milk over the fire during cheese making. The skimmed milk was poured into the boiler, which was then placed on the hearth and hung from a swivel arm to facilitate even heating.
The boiler has a wide, pot-bellied shape with a smaller diameter toward the bottom, rounded. Two small handles are welded along the raised upper edge, within circular holes cut in the bank. The vessel is supported by a wrought-iron frame that rests on the ground by means of four feet.
