The rasp was used to file wood. The tool could be held by either end: using the round end, holes were enlarged in the wood; instead, swiping the knife-like end across the surface thinned the wood. It was a common tool in carpentry work, used to achieve a finer finish on the wood. It was typical of the carpenter's workshop, where it was used with precision
