Description

The anvil was used in agricultural work, particularly for rebating the edge of sickles and scythes. It consisted of a shaped iron stake, pointed at the lower end, with a flat surface at the other. The tool was driven into the ground, and the farmer, sitting down, realigned over the wire with the special hammer. This tool, used mainly during haymaking, was essential for keeping agricultural tools sharp.
