The Legend of Artüs

A Grandola legend tells of a nobleman who, sneaking back from Loveno, encountered the Devil along the river. Terrified, he promised Mary Most Holy that if he was saved, he would build a chapel in her honor.

As Anna Denti explains (see publication "In the Pathways," 2000):

"the legend tells of a gentleman belonging to a noble family of Grandola, who went to visit a friend of his in Loveno (riding his horse), on his return from this visit (kept hidden from his wife), he found himself in front of the Devil who terrorized him by making him ride while standing on the riverbank. Never had he felt such fear; such a traumatic experience...that at the very instant when he now no longer believed he would get out of that situation alive, his thoughts resorted to that Mother of all...., making a promise to Mary Most Holy, if he was saved, she would erect a chapel in his honor."

In the Artüs Chapel we find a wooden high relief with a subject inspired by the legend.
