Description
The hay scythe was a tool used to mow grass during haymaking. It consisted of a slightly curved blade, a palm width to the right and a point to the left. The upper edge of the blade was arched, while the inside was riveted with a very sharp edge. The blade was attached at a right angle to the upper end of a wooden handle, with a handle attached toward the bottom of the handle.
The tool was wielded by the farmer, who twirled it at the base of the stalks to collect grass in the barns.

Preserved specimen
consisting of a slightly curved blade, on the right palm wide, on the left ending in a point. The upper edge has a slightly curved shape, the inside of the blade is riveted with a very faglient edge. The blade is attached at a right angle to the upper end of the wooden handle. The handle has a handle attached toward the bottom of the handle.
