The hay scythe was a tool used for mowing grass, particularly during haymaking. Consisting of a slightly curved blade, one palm wide on the right and pointed on the left, the inside of the blade was riveted with a very sharp edge. The blade was attached at a right angle to the upper end of a wooden handle, which had a grip toward the bottom. The farmer held the scythe to twirl it at the base of the stalks while harvesting grass.
