The hay scythe was a tool used to mow grass during haymaking. It consists of a slightly curved blade, one palm wide on one side and pointed on the other. The top edge is arched, while the inside of the blade is rebated to make it very sharp. The blade is attached at a right angle to the top end of a wooden handle, with a handle placed toward the bottom of the handle. The farmer used it to mow grass by twirling the scythe at the base of the stalks.
