Description

Lepidodendron (Sternb., 1820) is a genus of fossil trees of the order Lepidodendrales, which lived in the Carboniferous.
As tall as thirty meters, lepidodendrons belonged to the arboreal lycophytes. Their stem was covered with conspicuous leaf scars arranged in a spiral pattern; the leaves, linear, short and with a quadrangular cross-section, were present only on the youngest twigs. The trunk of lepidodendrons, at the base, could reach a diameter of two meters, and forked only at the top.
These plants also had secondary stem growth by a cambium.
