Paralepidotus ornatus is a semionotid that is very common in the Noric seas. The most striking feature of this species are the robust parallelepiped-shaped scales and the typically heterocercal tail, typical of the more primitive Triassic fishes.
The arrontodate teeth made Paralepidotus a shredder fish like today's bream.
