The tool, used to separate the finer parts from the coarser ones, was a sieve. One poured in the substance to be screened and, gripping the handles, swung the object sideways, allowing the fine material to pass through the holes, which fell out and collected in a container below. It was an essential tool in seed screening to ensure accurate selection and quality of the material to be used.
