The popular tradition of the Como area has always been characterized by the presence of stories and legends related to witchcraft: in the past, the diocese was also one of the theaters where witch hunts reached the highest and bloodiest levels. Often such beliefs are linked to features of the natural environment or singular elements of the territory and landscape; such as, in Grandola ed Uniti, the Rogolone.
The stories that accompany the Grandolese Oak are similar to those that developed around the famous Benevento Walnut, another famous Italian "dark" tree.
Rogolone, according to legend, was the scene of obscene witchcraft rites performed by sorceresses and wizards, favored by the plant's special magical properties. They prepared their concoctions here, dancing around the fire and sacrificing gifts to the evil one: ancestral rites of ancient pagan origin.
Such folk tales can only add charm to an already unique place, making any stop in the shade of the centuries-old foliage of this grand old grandolese even more meaningful.
