The hammer was used in shoemaking to apply irons under the soles of shoes during repair operations. It consists of a metal solid with a flat, round tip at one end and a flat tip at the opposite end, while a central eye allows a cylindrically shaped wooden handle to be inserted. It was wielded to repeatedly tap the irons under the soles of shoes.
