Lepiconus

Fossil coral from the Rhaetian outcrops of Zu Limestone on the slopes of the Crocione-Tremezzo Mountains. Numerous remains of coelenterates (corals) that populated a coral reef similar to today's (Bahamas, Red Sea) are preserved in these rocks. Lepiconus has a conical shape, the main divisions being interrupted by a series of transverse septa, sometimes very robust.
The fossils of the Zu Limestone of Bene Lario were studied by the distinguished geologist Stoppani, who made some descriptions. The specimen in question is well preserved.
