Preserved specimen

Fossil coral from the Rhaetian outcrops of Zu Limestone on the slopes of the Crocione-Tremezzo Mountains. Numerous remains of coelenterates (corals) that populated a coral reef similar to today's (Bahamas, Red Sea) are preserved in these rocks. Lepiconus has a conical shape, the main divisions being interrupted by a series of transverse septa, sometimes very robust.
The fossils of the Zu Limestone of Bene Lario were studied by the distinguished geologist Stoppani, who made some descriptions. The photo shows a present-day coral species side by side, note the relative similarity to the fossil on display at the museum
