Seed fossil of the genus Trigonocarpus: these are plants having characteristics intermediate between ferns and seeded conifers (Pteridosperms). The finding of these fossils is a relevant fact for understanding the biological evolution of plants; in fact, Trigonocarpus testifies to a possible derivation of Spermatophytes (seed plants) from Pteridophytes (spore plants).
The Sanagra Valley is the only Italian site to have provided seed fossils from the Carboniferous period.
The specimen is well preserved enough to preserve the three-dimensionality.
