La Chioderia was the most important production center in the Sanagra Valley: until 1820 it was a mill that was later transformed and redeveloped several times.
For a few decades it was a wire mesh and especially nail factory, hence the name "chioderia," whose directors were an Erba and an Airoldi from Menaggio. The nails produced were of different types and about ten workers were employed there. The business ceased in 1920, and in 1943 the building was converted into a padlock factory by Olme, a firm founded by the Mascheroni family of Milan in 1925.
At its peak, the small factory came to employ 110 workers. The main products were brass "Tenax" padlocks, and some specimens are still preserved in the ethnographic room of the Val Sanagra Museum. Later new production lines were added: woodworking machines, "Ercules" iron padlocks, piston washing machines, electric motors, handles, ball bearings, and even toys.
The factory closed in 1966, and the facilities were abandoned and later became a site for raising chickens. Years later, large communicating tanks and the complex became a trout farming facility.
