The origin of the place name of Velzo is not certain, but the village still retains a rustic appearance that reflects the tradition of the thousand-year-old peasant culture.
Surrounded by fields, the village is characterized by narrow streets, stone houses attached to each other, wrought-iron balconies, votive chapels, and frescoes on the walls of the houses. There is also no shortage of wide, old stone doorways at the entrances to some houses.
Between Velzo and Codogna, on a rise that offers a splendid view of the Menaggio Valley, lies the Parish Church of St. Syrus and Margaret.
