La Grass Spinning Mill is an old factory located next to the Valley Bridge, opposite the eponymous Valley Mill.
For centuries, the production of silk and cotton thread was the main activity for much of the population of the Como area. The finished products were transported in chests on large wagons and delivered to weaving mills in Porlezza, about 6 km away.
The labor force employed in this process was predominantly female. Women, called "filerine," worked in this area. The path down from Cardano to the valley was built by the men of the village to allow women quicker access, as the original path was much longer.
A few kilometers from Filanda Erba, in Menaggio territory, was another mill called Burgatto, where many members of the Grandola ed Uniti community worked. For decades, the Burgatto was a fundamental source of livelihood for the local community.
