The Bee-eater is a bird belonging to the Meropidae family, famous for its brightly colored plumage and elegance in flight. Medium-sized, it reaches a length of about 25-29 cm, with a wingspan of up to 40 cm. It has a slender body, a long neck and a thin, slightly curved beak adapted for catching insects in flight.
Its plumage is spectacular: the head has brown shades with golden hues, while the back is mostly reddish. The wings and belly are bright green, and the throat is deep yellow bordered by a black line. A thin dark band crosses the eyes, giving the bee-eater a distinctive appearance. The tail is long and pointed, with slightly longer central feathers in adult specimens.
The bee-eater is a migratory bird that nests in colonies, often along sandy banks or clay walls, where it digs tunnels to lay its eggs. It feeds mainly on flying insects, such as bees, wasps and dragonflies, which it captures with precision through agile and rapid flight. It carefully removes its stinger before ingesting potentially dangerous prey, such as bees.
This species prefers warm and open environments, such as plains, hills and agricultural areas. Its social behavior, melodious song and bright colors make it one of the most fascinating species to observe in the wild.
