The Chicken is a domestic bird derived from several wild species native to India. Darwin initially attributed its paternity only to Gallus gallus bankiva, based on reasons such as the similarity of plumage to that of some domestic breeds, the variability of subspecies according to their geographical spread, and the fecundity of eggs resulting from matings with domestic chickens. However, this position changed during the 20th century through hybridization experiments with other wild species. Today it is recognized that several species contributed to the creation of the domestic chicken, Gallus gallus domesticus. Domestic chickens have been raised for multiple purposes: meat, eggs, feathers, but also as pets, for cockfighting competitions, and for religious, sporting, and ornamental reasons.
The specimen is displayed in a museum display case setting; it is taxidermied with closed wings and is unsupported. Good state of preservation.
