The Common Raven is a large bird, with a length ranging from 50 to 67 cm and a wingspan of up to 1.3 meters. It has completely black plumage, but with iridescent highlights that vary from blue-violet to green depending on the angle of light. The beak is stout and curved, suitable for picking up and handling food, and the eyes are dark and penetrating.
Its legs are strong and black, suitable for walking over rough terrain. This bird is extremely intelligent, known for its ability to solve complex problems, use tools and perform aerial acrobatics. It is a very curious animal, capable of imitating sounds and voices, including human ones. The common raven is omnivorous and scavenger, feeding on a wide range of foods, such as insects, small mammals, fruit and carcasses. It prefers mountain, forest and rocky habitats, but also adapts to more man-made settings.
It builds its nest in hard-to-reach places, such as tall trees or rock walls, and pairs are monogamous, staying together for life. Its voice is varied, with a deep "croak," but capable of making more complex sounds and imitating other noises. Widespread throughout much of Europe, Asia and North America, the common raven is an adaptable species, although rarer in some areas due to habitat loss.
Taxidermied specimen with wings closed on rigid wooden support (trunk).
