La Cornacchia is a bird with entirely black, shiny plumage. It is distinguished from the imperial crow (Corvus corax) mainly by its slightly smaller size and the absence of the white plaque that characterizes the base of the crow's beak. Young crows, in particular, are very similar to adults and difficult to distinguish.
It prefers partially wooded environments and has found considerable advantage in man-made environmental transformations, adapting easily to human settlements and even reaching high altitudes. In fact, the crow can nest up to about 2,000 meters above sea level and, during the summer, reaches the most popular alpine refuges. Although it avoids dense forest areas, it adapts well to areas with a limited number of trees in large agricultural areas, where it builds its nests.
Widespread throughout Europe, the crow is a particularly adaptable species due to its intelligence and ability to obtain food, making it less vulnerable and at low risk of extinction. Its ability to adapt to urban environments and changes in the landscape allows it to thrive in a variety of habitats, from rural to mountainous environments.
Taxidermied black crow specimen with wings closed on rigid wooden stand; good condition.
