Description

The Dipper is a small bird belonging to the Turdidae family, easily recognized by its characteristic behavior and distinctive appearance. It has a compact body, with a length of about 20-22 cm and a weight ranging between 70 and 90 grams. The plumage of the dipper is generally dark gray on top, while the belly and breast are white or slightly mottled. Its legs are short and strong, adapted to living in aquatic environments, and its beak is relatively short and slightly curved.

The dipper is known for its unique behavior: it is an aquatic bird often found near rivers, streams and creeks, where it feeds on aquatic insects, small fish and larvae. It is adept at diving and diving underwater in search of food, often walking on the bottom of the waterway. Its flight is characterized by a rapid beat and low flight above the water; when it is not flying, it moves by walking nimbly along the banks.

This species is sedentary in many of its distribution areas, which include rivers and streams in Europe, Asia and parts of North Africa. The dipper is a skilled nest builder, which it makes among rocks near waterways or in natural cavities. Its diet is mainly carnivorous, with a preference for aquatic invertebrates, but it also does not disdain small fish.
The song of the dipper is melodious, and can be heard along riverbanks during the breeding season. The species is generally solitary, but during the nesting season, males emit their call to attract females and defend their territory.
