The Dormouse is a small mammal in the family Erinnaciidae, with a body length of up to about 30 cm, of which about 13 cm is occupied by the tail. Its average weight is about 100 grams.
The body of the dormouse is covered with soft, chestnut-gray fur on the back, while the belly is bright white. The dormouse's snout is characterized by large dark eyes, which give its face a lively expression, and long vibrissae (sensory hairs) on the sides of the snout, which enable it to orient itself even in the dark. The ears are small, round in shape, and are barely visible under the fur.
Although its size and body shape may resemble a squirrel, the dormouse is mainly distinguished by its tail, which is always long and outstretched, unlike that of the squirrel, which is thicker and voluminously curled.
The dormouse pup is called a dormouse or ghirin. These animals are known for their nocturnal behavior and for hibernating during the winter months.
Taxidermied specimen without stand; good state of preservation. It is displayed in the museum's middle valley diorama.
