Description

The Great Spotted Woodpecker is one of the largest and most common woodpecker species in Europe and temperate regions of Asia. With a length of about 23-26 cm and a wingspan that can exceed 40 cm, it is easily recognizable by its vibrant and distinctive plumage. The upper body is predominantly black with white spots on the wings and a distinctive white band extending down the neck. The belly is white, but the male's lower back is marked with a red spot, a feature that also distinguishes it from the female, which does not have this coloration.
The Great Spotted Woodpecker is known for its tapping behavior, which it performs on tree trunks in search of insects, such as ants, grubs and other invertebrates. Its stiff tail and strong legs enable it to climb trees with great agility while maintaining an upright position. It is a territorial bird, and during the mating season males emit sonorous calls that serve to demarcate their territory and attract females.
This woodpecker is a species that lives in mature coniferous and deciduous forests, but it can also adapt to parks and gardens with large trees. Its diet consists mainly of insects, but it can also feed on fruits and seeds during periods of food shortages.
In the breeding season, the great spotted woodpecker builds its nest in cavities dug in tree trunks, where the female usually lays 3-7 eggs. The species is widespread throughout much of Europe and parts of Asia, and despite environmental threats such as habitat loss and hunting, it is still quite common.
The Great Spotted Woodpecker is a symbol of forest biodiversity and plays an important ecological role in controlling woody insect populations.
