The Martin Fisherman is an easily recognizable bird due to its vibrant plumage, characterized by bright blue and orange tones that make it particularly visible in its surroundings. Small in size, ranging from 16 to 17 cm in length, it is distinguished not only by its appearance but also by its unique hunting behavior. The kingfisher flies low in a straight line above the surface of the water, where it searches for its main food: small fish and crustaceans. This behavior, combined with its keen eyesight, allows it to spot prey easily.
The kingfisher's long, tapered beak, strong and pointed, is one of the main tools with which it catches fish. In addition, the same beak enables it to dig its nest in the sandy or clay banks of streams, where it creates a tunnel that can be up to 60 cm long. When hunting, the kingfisher positions itself on a branch or rock above the water, from which it swoops down to grab its prey. Once the fish is caught, it returns to its perch to consume it.
Its call is characterized by a short, high-pitched, easily recognizable sound and is emitted mainly as the bird moves between its various vantage points. The kingfisher is a skilled solitary hunter, but its presence in a habitat rich in fresh water and fish is a sign of a healthy ecosystem.
Well-preserved specimen of kingfisher, a small bird, between 17 and 25 cm long, with a wingspan reaching 26 cm and weighing between 26 and 46 g. The taxidermied individual in question is preserved with its wings closed on a wooden stand.
