The Lonely Sparrow is a bird in the family Turdidae, with a length of about 23 cm and a weight of 60 grams. Sexual dimorphism is evident: the male has dark blue plumage with darker wings and tail during the summer season, while the female is bluish-brown on the back with a pale breast fading to brown. The species is widespread in southern Europe, North Africa and central Asia, and is found in Italy in mountainous and rocky areas, especially in sunnier areas, except in the Po Valley, where it is rarer.
The lonely sparrow prefers rocky habitats and is often observed in habitats where it may nest on rock faces, feeding mainly on insects, small mollusks and fruits. Despite its name, the lonely sparrow can also be seen in groups during migration or at feeding sites, but it tends to be more shy and reserved than other monticola species.
