La Magpie is a passerine bird belonging to the corvid family. With a length ranging from 44 to 46 cm and a wingspan that can exceed 50 cm, it is easily recognized by its distinctive plumage. It has a black and white body, with a white belly and a glossy black back and wings with green and blue highlights, while the tail is long and thin, with a black coloration and metallic hues.
The male and female are similar in coloration, but females tend to be slightly smaller. The magpie has a long, thin, black beak and strong, dark legs. It is a very intelligent bird, known for its curiosity and lively behavior. Magpies are also very sociable, forming groups, and are often observed moving among tree branches or moving on the ground in search of food. They feed on a varied diet that includes insects, small mammals, eggs, fruits, and even carcasses.
The magpie is also famous for its habit of picking up shiny or colorful objects, which it may sometimes carry into the nest. Although it is generally considered a social bird, it can become territorial during the nesting period, aggressively defending its territory from other magpies or competing species.
This species is widespread in Europe and Asia, and is also present in much of Italy, where it adapts well to urban, rural and forest environments. The magpie is a partial migratory bird, with some groups moving seasonally depending on weather conditions.
