Historic route of the former Menaggio - Porlezza Railway

This fascinating route follows the old route of the Menaggio-Porlezza railway, active between 1884 and 1939, now converted into a convenient bicycle and pedestrian path. As you travel along this route, you will pass through extraordinary landscapes, including lush nature, historical evidence and lake views.

Starting from Menaggio, on the shores of Lake Como, it climbs gently inland through the territory of Grandola ed Uniti and the hamlet of Cardano, skirting the slope of Mount Crocetta and overlooking the valley of the Valstera stream. Along the route, which maintains the moderate gradient of the original railway (never exceeding 5%), one can still admire some engineering elements of the time, such as iron bridges and tunnels, that tell the story of a unique line.

One of the most striking points of the route is the crossing of the Piano Lake Nature Reserve, in the municipality of Carlazzo. Here nature reigns supreme, with forests, bodies of water and local wildlife providing an immersive and relaxing experience. The trail is suitable for everyone, whether you want a leisurely walk or prefer a bike ride.
