Description

The Woodcock is a stout, squarish passerine bird with a large head that appears to be grafted directly onto the trunk and a conical, stubby, stout beak; the beak is black and does not change color between winter and breeding season, unlike what is indicated, as this characteristic does not apply to woodcocks but to other species.
The eyes are large, round and brown, while the short, black (not fleshy) legs have four toes, three pointing forward and one backward. The plumage is soft and silky: the background color is grayish-brown with pinkish hues, which on the head intensifies to form a hazel hood. The breast tends to gray and the belly is whitish, with light shades also in the undertail.
From the nape of the neck to the sides of the neck is a silvery-gray crescent, which in some subspecies may join at the breast. A black mask is visible around the eyes, extending to the beak, where it forms a black bib and mustachios.
The wings are dark brown in the proximal part and bluish in the distal part, separated by a band of white feathers, with yellow and red spots resembling wax drops; the tail is dark brown, with a black tip and a yellow terminal band.
The female has a more faded coloration than the male, with more prominent gray tones, less extent of gray on the nape, and reduced intensity of black around the eyes and beak.
