La Cesena is a medium-sized bird, about 25-27 cm long, with a wingspan of about 40-45 cm. It is a member of the turdidae family and is easily recognized by its distinctive plumage. The upper part of the body is gray with a slight olive-brown tinge, while the breast and belly are grayish-white with black spots that are concentrated on the upper part of the breast, forming a kind of dark "collar."
The head is gray in color, with a light eye ring highlighting its dark eyes. The tail is rather long and dark in color, while the legs are light brown.
The wasp is a migratory bird that nests in forested and open areas of northern Europe and Asia. During winter, it moves southward, even arriving in Italy, where it can be observed in fields, gardens and agricultural areas. The hornbill is a predominantly frugivorous bird, feeding mainly on fruits, berries and seeds, but may also consume insects, larvae and small invertebrates during the summer season.
Its diet leads it to search for food mainly on the ground, and the hornbill is known to be a rather shy and shy bird, often moving in small groups. Its song consists of a series of melodious sounds, but less loud and varied than those of other thrushes. The hornbill is also a bird that tends to be most active in the morning or at dusk and has rather reserved habits.
Taxidermied specimen with wings closed on rigid wooden stand; good state of preservation. It is displayed in the middle valley diorama.
