Description

The Collared Blackbird is a bird in the turdidae family that is smaller and stockier than its congener the Common Blackbird (Turdus merula). The male reaches a length of about 23 cm and is easily recognized by its black plumage with greenish-brown highlights, edged with pale. One of its most distinctive features is the white crescent-shaped patch on its breast, which gives it the common name "collared blackbird." The female has a less vivid, brownish-gray livery, with a less pronounced crescent on the breast and grayish-white hues. Juveniles have similar coloration to the female, but lack the characteristic white collar, making them often confused with the common blackbird. The collared blackbird is a species that prefers woodland habitats, but it can also be found in hilly and mountainous areas, where it nests between April and July.
