Description

The Goldfinch is a bird in the family Fringillidae, easily recognized by its bright plumage and characteristic red color covering the top of its head and face, contrasting with the white of its throat. The body is jointed and small in size, with a length ranging between 12 and 14 cm and a wingspan of about 21-25 cm.

The plumage of the goldfinch is very colorful and vibrant. The wings are black with a very prominent yellow band, which gives the bird a special beauty in flight. The breast is beige or white, while the back has olive-brown hues. The legs are flesh-colored, and the thin, pointed bill is bright red.
The goldfinch is usually a social and lively bird, living in groups, especially during the winter season when it joins other finches and similar species.

It is mainly found in open environments, such as lawns, gardens, parks and agricultural fields, but is also common in more urbanized areas, where it feeds mainly on seeds, preferring those of thistle, dandelion and other herbaceous plants.

During the courtship period, the male emits a distinctive melodious song, which he uses to attract the female. The nest is built in tree branches or bushes, using materials such as dry grass, plant fibers and moss. The female usually lays 4-6 eggs, which are incubated for about 12 days. The chicks are fed mainly on seeds, which the parents collect and bring to the nest.

The goldfinch is a protected bird in many areas, as its beauty and distinctive song make it highly sought after, although its natural habitat is diminishing due to the transformation of farmland and urbanization.
